Dear AUSD Families, We wanted to make sure to keep you up to date with the latest information. We have been informed by SDGE to be prepared for Public Safety Power Shut Offs beginning as early as this evening into Wednesday, depending on the severity of winds and potential damage to the electric system. They have notified approximately 50,483 customers who may be impacted by the shutdown, and some of our surrounding neighborhoods have already had the electric turned off. At present, school will be open tomorrow but we wanted to reach out and share that schools may need to close. Dear AUSD Families, Yesterday, I shared some brief information regarding Gov. Newsom’s Regional Stay-At-Home order and I wanted to share some additional updates. The Regional Stay-At-Home order will impact many businesses and industries in San Diego County for at least three weeks starting this month. The order is applicable in areas where hospitals’ intensive care unit (ICU) capacity falls below 15%. The order does not modify existing state guidance regarding K-12 schools. Our schools may continue to remain open for in-person instruction. The order, which divides California into five regions, prohibits private gatherings of any size; closes operations for sectors such as bars and wineries, and salons; and requires 100% masking and physical distancing in retail and other sectors. San Diego County is in the Southern California Tier, which also includes Imperial, Inyo, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. We will continue to work with local public health as we move forward. I will also continue to share updates as they become available. We are expecting that electricity will be returned to our community and school will be able to resume on Monday. Dear AUSD Families, The safety of our students, staff, and school community is our top priority. With this in mind, we want to keep you updated on the latest information regarding school closures. We will be closing schools tomorrow, Friday, December 4 due to the power outages, which are expected to continue through tomorrow. Teachers are preparing asynchronous activities for students in the event that the power is restored. These will be posted in each teacher’s Google Classroom. In addition, Governor Newsom has just announced that regions, where ICU capacity falls below 15%, will be placed into a Regional Stay-At-Home order. Governor Newsom stated that when regions are placed into the Regional Stay-At-Home order critical infrastructure, schools, retail (at 20% capacity), and restaurants (take out and delivery) will remain open. AUSD School Closed Thursday, December 3 Power is out in many areas across Alpine and the winds are expected to continue. At present SDGE is stating that the power outages could be sustained for long periods of time. In an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of all of our students and staff, schools will be closed Thursday, December 3.

Dear AUSD Families, The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning in effect for inland Orange County and San Diego County valleys and mountains from 6 p.m. today through 10 p.m. on Saturday. They also issued a high wind watch from 1 a.m. Thursday morning until Friday at noon. Should power shutoffs occur while students are on campus, the school day will continue as normal until students are picked up or the day ends. We remain in close contact with the San Diego County Office of Education, SDGE, and other officials and will keep you updated on any impact. Free COVID-19 tests and flu shots will be available tomorrow Wednesday, December 2 at JMMS from 9:00-3:00. All students, families, and community members, are welcome. The drive through process is quick and easy.

Dear Mountain View Learning Academy Families, As some of you might be aware, the AUSD Board of Trustees voted at Tuesday night’s board meeting to implement our Phase 3 learning model on January 19, 2021. In phase three, our face-to-face students will attend school three days a week - Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays each week. We will keep the same drop-off and pick-up schedule. We will also continue to offer a pure homeschool model. We realize that this decision might cause some of you to change which type of learning your student currently participates in. If you desire to change your student’s learning model to 100% homeschool learning or to face-to-face three days a week you must notify your child’s teacher by Thursday, November 19th at 2:00 pm Otherwise, current hybrid face-to-face students will automatically switch to face-to-face three days a week and current 100% homeschool students will remain in 100% homeschool. AUSD's phase three reopening will occur on January 19, 2021. Students will return for face to face learning four days a week.

We will be distributing free Grab and Go Meal Bags today, Monday 11/9 from 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm in the JMMS parking lot. The meals are FREE to all children 18 and under!

MVLA's first graders were so excited to work on a STEM project that they wanted to give up their lunch playtime to work on building their Mayflowers. The challenge was to use the provided materials to build for maximum capacity and/or maximum speed to deliver as many Pilgrims as quickly as possible. The class discussed displacement in regards to ships floating.

Free drive through COVID-19 tests and flu shots are available at JMMS today from 9:00-2:00. All students and community members are welcome.

Dear SHES and MVLA Families, Shadow Hills Elementary School will be utilized as a polling place. Election officers and poll workers will be on-site beginning today through Wednesday of next week. To ensure the safety of our students and staff, and to keep our health and safety protocols in place, election officers and poll workers will not be on campus other than in the multipurpose room. Portable restrooms have been ordered for the election workers so that we can continue to keep our campus secure and our protocols in place. All individuals voting will enter through the multi-purpose room and exit the same way thus avoiding having anyone other than staff and students on campus. As always, thank you for continued support and focus on our students.

October 26, 2020 Dear AUSD Families: As we enter week six of our hybrid learning model I wanted to provide some important updates. First, I want to sincerely thank all of our staff, parents, and families for their support and effort these past weeks. As one of the first public school districts in the county to reopen schools, we were chartering a new and uncertain path. We built our reopening plan on strong health and safety protocols, and the belief that our students would be best served by learning in person at school with their teachers. I am extremely grateful and appreciative of all the hard work and collaboration that has made our reopening of schools both safe and a model for other districts. Additionally, I am pleased to share that on Tuesday, October 20th, the Board of Trustees approved the installation of indoor air filtration systems in all of our classrooms and buildings. These new systems will be similar to what you find in hospitals and medical settings. I am proud to share that we are among the first school districts in the state to install these units. A HUGE thanks to our Board of Trustees for ensuring that Alpine Union continues to place the health and safety of our students and staff front and center, while also setting an example for how to effectively and safely reopen schools and plan for the future. A Superintendent’s Advisory Task Force has also been working to develop plans for our Phase Three reopening. At our Board of Trustees meeting on November 10th, the Board will discuss the Task Force recommendations and a target date for a full return to in-person learning. A month ago we implemented COVID-19 testing for all AUSD staff. Every two weeks free drive through COVID-19 testing and flu shots are available at JMMS. The testing plan has been expanded, and all community members, students, and families are welcome to receive a free flu shot or a COVID-19 test during our test days. I hope you and your family members will take advantage of this free service. Dates are posted on our website and social media. Last, we have expanded our Grab and Go meals, and are offering meal pick up on Mondays during the day from 11:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. and in the evening from 5:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. Meals are available free of charge for any school-age child under the age of 18. Please help spread the word so that we can continue to support our Alpine families and community members. As always, thank you for your continued support.
