Free COVID-19 tests and flu shots will take place today, Wednesday, January 20, 2021, from 9:00 - 2:30 at JMMS. No appointment necessary.

Hello Boulder Oaks Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful three-day weekend.
As we enter into our 16th week of being open, I want to thank you once again for holding strong and persevering through this challenging time. Also, thank you for helping us uphold our protocols so that we can all stay safe.
You may have already heard from your child’s teacher, we WILL be celebrating Valentine’s Day at Boulder Oaks. Please see the attached flyer for all of the details and be sure to send in your Valentine cards anytime between January 25th - 29th so that we can quarantine them. Valentines turned in after the 29th will not be accepted. Thank you!
Over the next four weeks, we will be holding another PTA membership drive with the hopes of engaging as many parents as we possibly can in PTA. Even though our PTA is unable to do some of our usual activities this year, it is important that we continue to build a strong PTA so we can bring back every single one of our PTA programs next year!! These include both our art docent program and our PE Lab program as well as our fundraisers and activities days like Western Days. Behind the scenes, our PTA has provided each teacher with classroom supplies and goodies before we went face-to-face and during the holidays this year. Please remember that joining PTA does not commit you to attend meetings. It is just simply purchasing a membership. Anyone who joins will receive a BOES sticker and the class with the highest percentages of memberships, all students will receive a BOES t-shirt. In our 2nd and 3rd place classes, all students will receive a BOES bracelet. I highly encourage you to join as we work to build back up our PTA for the 2021-2022 school year!! A flyer with the link to join is attached.
As mentioned in last week’s weekly update, we would like our parents to be involved in our school even though they cannot physically be on campus. In a collaborative effort with our School Site Council, we are asking for volunteers to join Zooms with your child’s class and share a book, skill, or do a project with the class. You can read your favorite children’s book to the class, talk about your career, or do an art or science project with the class! Please see the attached flyer for more details and contact your child’s teacher to arrange a time to Zoom with the class.
Our School Site Council meets this Thursday at 7:45. Anyone is welcome to join the meeting. Please use this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9386495394.
We will have make-up pictures days for all of our students that were unable to get their pictures taken a few weeks ago. Cohort B will be this Thursday, January 21st and Cohort A will be next Tuesday, January 26th. 100% Distance Learners who missed picture day can come either day at 12:00 to have their picture taken.
Thanks for all you do! Have a great week!
Jenna Weinert

Hello Boulder Oaks Families,
Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow, Monday, January 18th, due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I hope that you are all enjoying your weekend and this beautiful weather!
Thank you!

Free COVID-19 tests and flu shots will take place today, Wednesday, January 13, 2021, from 9:00 - 2:30 at JMMS. No appointment necessary.

The District was notified today that an individual at Boulder Oaks Elementary School has tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19. Per guidelines, we are notifying parents and staff of the potential exposure dates. This individual was last on campus on January 5, 2021. The potential exposure date is therefore January 5, 2021. All individuals who were in close contact have been notified.
This individual is currently in isolation. Due to privacy laws, information regarding this individual’s identity cannot be released. Please respect this individual’s privacy during this difficult time. Upon learning the news, we contacted the local health department, which will determine who was a “close contact” with this individual.
To ensure everyone’s safety we will continue to follow all of our cleaning and disinfecting protocols per health guidelines and as outlined in the AUSD Reopening Schools Plan and Guidebook and in Board Policy 0470: COVID-19 Mitigation Plan.

Hello Boulder Oaks Families,
I hope that you all had a great weekend!
We had a fantastic first week back at school after break. A huge thank you goes out to both students and staff for holding strong with all of our safety protocols. Thank you for continuing to monitor your child for any symptoms and for being diligent about keeping your child home and calling the school office. By maintaining our standards, it will enable us to continue to stay open.
We are desperately missing the involvement of our parents on our school site. Over the next few weeks, we will be focused on engaging our parents in other ways so that we can still feel connected as a school family. Next Tuesday, January 19th we will begin a month-long PTA Membership drive. Simultaneously, we will be inviting all of our parents to participate in classrooms by sharing a skill with the class or doing a read-aloud. More information will be forthcoming from your child’s teacher.
Join us for VIRTUAL FUN FRIDAYS. This Friday, January 15th, is Dress up your Pet Day. Share a picture of your favorite pet dressed up on #virtualfunfriday.
There is no school this upcoming Monday, January 18th, due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Have a wonderful week ahead and enjoy your upcoming three day weekend!

AUSD Dual Language Preschool begins January 19. Registration is limited and a few spots remain. Call the CELC office at 619-659-8250 for more information.

Hello Boulder Oaks Families,
I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and holiday season.
I want to start off by thanking all of you that donated to our gift card drive. Thanks to your generosity we were able to support several of our own BOES families. They were all very grateful for the extra help during the holiday season.
I know that the news of not returning to four days a week in January was extremely disappointing for all of us. Please know that we will continue to give your children the very best education that we possibly can despite the challenging circumstances. Thank you for hanging in there and for your continuous support.
As a reminder, we ask that you monitor your student for any signs of illness each day such as a cough, shortness of breath, runny nose, and fever at home before coming to school. Any student with these symptoms or a fever of 100°F or more should not go to a school site, including ESS. Those experiencing symptoms including a persistent cough, shortness of breath, a runny nose should not attend school or ESS, even if no fever is present. All students and staff are required to wear a face covering, and student temperatures will continue to be taken upon entering classes and buildings.
The district continues to serve food during our Hybrid Schedule on Mondays from 11:00am to 12:30pm at JMMS to AUSD families. If that time doesn't work for you, there is also a 5:00 pm pick up.
Please report all absences to the office. We are required to trace all absences. Illnesses may require a 10-14 day stay at home.
On Thursday, January 7th, we will be holding an evening PTA Meeting from 5:30-6:30 in the hopes of getting more parents involved. All parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend. If you would like to attend, please click on the following Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9386495394
Join us for VIRTUAL FUN FRIDAYS. This Friday, January 8th, is Dress Like Snowman Day! Post a picture of you in your "snowman" outfit using #virtualfunfriday.
Thank you for all you do and have a great week!

Dear AUSD Families,
We are excited to welcome our students back to campus on January 4. As I shared in a previous letter, we are proud that our district has been operating in-person learning at all of our schools longer than virtually any other district in the county, and we have done it without a need for a school closure for 13 consecutive weeks.
This pandemic has changed the entire way we operate. Many of our staff have a high-risk condition or are otherwise vulnerable, and others live with someone who is high-risk. While this is a facet of life all of us face in a world of COVID, we have been and remain committed to providing in-person learning. In fact, we believe that in-person learning should be the default for our students.
Yet, our ability to stay open will depend on all of us working together to ensure that our health and safety protocols are followed.
I ask that you continue to support our staff in our efforts to remain open and strictly adhere to all protocols. Most districts in the county have not been operating with in-person learning and we want to remain open. I realize that the postponement of our Pjase Three reopening is disappointing news. With the surge in cases in the county and across the country we need to work together more than ever to ensure our campuses remain safe. Again, we want to do everything in our power to remain open for our students and appreciate your support in making that a reality.
Stay safe and well,
Dr. Rich Newman

Hello Boulder Oaks Families,
Just a reminder that our school wide holiday sing-along is tomorrow morning. Due to the large number of participants that we are expecting and that Zoom limits us to 300 participants at a time, we will break into cohorts. Cohort A will join the Zoom from 9:00-9:20 and Cohort B from 9:20-9:40. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we try out new things to bring our school community together during this time! The link can be found in your student’s Google Classroom.
Thank you!

We will be extending our PTA membership drive through January. We are encouraging all of our families to join as the PTA does so many wonderful things for our school. Please see the flyer below. It is simple and easy to join by clicking on the QR code. Thank you in advance for your support.
As we break for the holidays and welcome the new year, I just want to express my gratitude for each of you. It is amazing to think about how much our lives have changed since March 13th when we closed. 2020 has been extremely challenging to say the least but I could not be more proud of how well our school community has endured. On behalf of the entire BOES staff, we wish you a very happy holiday season. Cherish each and every moment with your loved ones. Please be safe and stay healthy.
All the best,
Jenna

Hello Boulder Oaks Parents,
I just wanted to make you aware that Picture Day for Cohort A has been rescheduled to Monday, December 14th. This was originally supposed to be Pajama Day so the kids will have the option of wearing P.J.s or a holiday sweater on Tuesday, December 15th. Picture Day for Cohort B remains the same - Friday, December 11th. Our 100% Distance Learners can come have their picture taken anytime between 10:45-11:45 on either day.
Thank you!
Jenna

Dear AUSD Families,
We just completed a briefing with SDG&E that it is highly likely that power will be shut down in Alpine. SDG&E informed us that the winds are on track to increase this evening with the strongest winds occurring late tonight and early tomorrow with power shut offs potentially occurring through Wednesday.
Out of an abundance of caution we will be closing schools for in person learning tomorrow. Teachers are preparing online materials in the event that electricity is available and students can access their Google Classroom.
I realize that this situation is incredibly frustrating for all of us. We do not make the decision to shut schools down lightly. Given the briefing from SDG&E and the likelihood that power may be shut off late this evening or early tomorrow, we want to make sure we take all necessary precautions to allow our families to prepare.
We appreciate your patience as we maneuver through yet another challenge. More than ever, we need to support one another through these trying times.
Stay safe and healthy,
Dr. Rich Newman

Dear AUSD Families,
We wanted to make sure to keep you up to date with the latest information. We have been informed by SDGE to be prepared for Public Safety Power Shut Offs beginning as early as this evening into Wednesday, depending on the severity of winds and potential damage to the electric system. They have notified approximately 50,483 customers who may be impacted by the shutdown, and some of our surrounding neighborhoods have already had the electric turned off.
At present, school will be open tomorrow but we wanted to reach out and share that schools may need to close. We are expecting an update directly from SDG&E early this evening and will communicate any updates.
Stay safe,
Dr. Newman

Hello Boulder Oaks Families,
I hope that this weekly update finds you safe and healthy! Just when you think that 2020 could not get crazier, one more hurdle is thrown at us!! But, once again we endured. I cannot thank you enough for your flexibility and resilience through Thursday and Friday’s school closure. Hopefully, this next set of Santa Ana winds do not shut us down again!
This week starts the first week of our Countdown to Winter Break dress-up days. Please see the schedule below. We are excited to finally be able to do our regular Picture Day with Hager photography. They will be setting up right outside of the auditorium and the students will have their picture taken standing up. We would like all of our students photographed so our Distance Learners are invited to come to have their picture taken from 10:45-11:45 on either day.
Monday 12/7 - Let’s be festive - wear your holiday hats, headbands, socks, or scarves!
Tuesday 12/8 - Dress your Best - School Picture Day
Thursday 12/10 - Let’s be festive - wear your holiday hats, headbands, socks, or scarves!
Friday 12/11 - Dress Your Best - School Picture Day

Tuesday 12/15 - Show your holiday spirit - wear your favorite holiday sweater
Thursday 12/17 - Let’s stay warm and cozy - wear your PJs.
Friday 12/18 - Show your holiday spirit - wear your favorite holiday sweater.
I am very excited for our first virtual school-wide sing-along next Wednesday, December 16th at 9:00. The Zoom link will be posted in your student’s Google Classroom next week. I hope that all of our students take the opportunity to participate in this fun event. It will be interesting, that’s for sure!! :)
Our Holiday Gift Card Drive started last week and goes through this Friday. We are in need of as many gift cards as we can possibly gather. As you know, this is a rough year for many of our families and I would love to offer them as much support and love as we can this holiday season. If you are able to donate a gift card to a place like a grocery store, Walmart, Target, or a gas station, please send it to school with your student or drop it off in the school office. Thank you!!
Have a wonderful week!
Jenna

Alpine schools will reopen on Monday, December 7. We look forward to welcoming our students back to school.

Dear AUSD Families,
Yesterday, I shared some brief information regarding Gov. Newsom’s Regional Stay-At-Home order and I wanted to share some additional updates. The Regional Stay-At-Home order will impact many businesses and industries in San Diego County for at least three weeks starting this month. The order is applicable in areas where hospitals’ intensive care unit (ICU) capacity falls below 15%.
The order does not modify existing state guidance regarding K-12 schools. Our schools may continue to remain open for in-person instruction. The order, which divides California into five regions, prohibits private gatherings of any size; closes operations for sectors such as bars and wineries, and salons; and requires 100% masking and physical distancing in retail and other sectors.
San Diego County is in the Southern California Tier, which also includes Imperial, Inyo, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. We will continue to work with local public health as we move forward. I will also continue to share updates as they become available.
We are expecting that electricity will be returned to our community and school will be able to resume on Monday. Please continue to check our website, social media and your child’s Google Classroom for updates.
As always, stay safe, and let’s make sure to continue to take care of one another.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rich Newman

Dear AUSD Families,
The safety of our students, staff, and school community is our top priority. With this in mind, we want to keep you updated on the latest information regarding school closures. We will be closing schools tomorrow, Friday, December 4 due to the power outages, which are expected to continue through tomorrow. Teachers are preparing asynchronous activities for students in the event that the power is restored. These will be posted in each teacher’s Google Classroom.
In addition, Governor Newsom has just announced that regions, where ICU capacity falls below 15%, will be placed into a Regional Stay-At-Home order. Governor Newsom stated that when regions are placed into the Regional Stay-At-Home order critical infrastructure, schools, retail (at 20% capacity), and restaurants (take out and delivery) will remain open.
Here is the link to the latest update regarding the Stay-At-Home order.
We will continue to keep you updated with the latest information. Stay well and healthy and take care of your loved ones.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rich Newman
